White vs. Black (Slavery/Colonial Period)

 

  • White= clean, beautiful, upstanding

  • Black= unclean, primitive, and immoral

What about in-between?

House Nigger vs. Field Nigger (The Divide)

  • Lighter individuals were given less of a work load, worked closer to the house, the Master and family.

  • Darker individuals were place in the fields, endured tremendous amount of manual labor.

 

 

Light-Skin vs. Dark-Skin (The War)

  • Dark skinned men= dangerous, criminals, threats, thugs

  • Light skinned men= less threatening, pretty boys,feminine

  • Dark skinned women= more manly features, rough, “ugly”, mean

  • Light skinned women= pretty, sociable, successful
